Characteristics edit
The item art for the chain mail includes a long sleeveless shirt made out of interlocking chains, also known as a byrnie or hauberk, as well as a set of metal pauldrons and a gorget that goes around the wearer's neck and shoulders. Worn around the waist is a metal belt. In some illustrations, the chain mail has longer sleeves or is worn over a long-sleeved grey tunic. It is a low to mid-ranking piece of armour that provides an adequate amount of protection for its price.

The Chain mail has a Defence bonus of +20, a Style bonus of +23, and can be equipped by the Hero, Kiefer, Sir Mervyn, and Aishe. It is part of Sir Mervyn's initial equipment when he joins the party. It can be purchased for 1,050 gold at Frobisher, the Pilgrim's Rest inn, and Alltrades Abbey in the past and sold for 525 gold. It has a 1⁄128 chance of being dropped by Deadcurion.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined edit
The Chain mail has a Defence bonus of +24 and can be equipped by the Hero, Kiefer, Sir Mervyn, and Aishe. It can be purchased for 1,150 gold from Frobisher in the present, as well as Pilgrim's Rest and Alltrades Abbey in the past. Chain mail is a 2♦ prize from the Lucky Panel at Pilgrim's Rest.

It can be purchased for 500 gold in Peregrin Quay and Simpleton and sold for 250 gold. One set can be found in Pickham. Chain mail can be made in the Alchemy Pot and can be mixed to create Bronze armour.

- The original Japanese name for Chain mail, Kusari katabira (くさりかたびら), refers to the Japanese term for mail armour that was used by samurai and their retainers in feudal Japan. However, the item art throughout the series history clearly depicts western chain mail that was used in Medieval Europe.
