Tortoise shell
The tortoise shell is a recurring set of armor in the Dragon Quest series. This large shell serves as makeshift protection, and does not slow down the wearer.

The tortoise shell has a defence bonus of +15, and it can be worn by Mages, Merchants and Gadabouts. It can be purchased in Reeve for 330 gold. It only appears in remake versions.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride edit
The tortoise shell has a defense bonus of +33 and can be purchased for 2,500 gold from Lodestar Harbour, Zoomingale, Mostroferrato, and Gotha Castle. It can only be worn by Sancho and several monster companions.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation edit
The tortoise shell has a defence bonus of +33, but reduces style by 15. It may be equipped by Nevan, Amos, and all of the slime recruits. The tortoise shell can be purchased from Aridea and Howsworth for 2,500 gold and sold for 1,875. It can also be dropped by marrow escapees, armoured wartoises, and plated goretoises.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past edit
The tortoise shell has a defence bonus of +33, but it reduces style by 15. It can only be equipped by Ruff and it can be purchased in La Bravoure, Al-Balad's Palace, and Gröndal for 3,800 gold and sold for 1,900. Tortoise shells can also be won from the Lucky Panel at the Casino.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King edit
The turtle shell (known as the tortoise shell in the 3DS version) has a defense bonus of +37. Only Yangus and Morrie can wear it. It can be purchased from Neos and the campsite west of Argonia for 2,300 gold and sold for 1,150 gold.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 edit
The shell increases the Builder's defence by +23. The necessary materials are 5 bones and 1 grass fibre, and the recipe is learned after defeating the strong crabber dabber doo on Furrowfield island.

The tortoise shell appears as a treasure and has a base value of 380,000 gold.
Trivia edit
- In the PSX version of VII the instruction manual contains an illustration of the Hero wearing the tortoise shell, but he cannot equip it in the game.
