"Yes... Death is the end. There is naught beyond it but infinite nothingness. It is a fearful thing indeed..."

—Warwick, fearful, at Moonahan

Warwick (リック, Rikku?, lit. Rick) is a knight of Moonbrooke appearing in Dragon Quest Builders 2. He is the captain of the Moonbrooke Brigade of Guards, and the kingdom's finest swordsman. He and Anessa serve as knights and advisors to the King of Moonbrooke.

Appearance and Personality edit

Warwick wears the standard in-game craftable chain mail armour and outfit, which includes a gray chain mail jacket with pauldrons, light grey britches and a brown leather belt with a gold buckle. The hem of the chain mail jacket is lined with a dark orange, and his gloves are the same colour. His gloves are plated with metal on the dorsal sides of the hands. His boots are brown with beige cuffs, which also have metal caps and metal heels. He has hazel eyes and possesses short blue hair in the hairstyle "mussed mop". In his character art, he is depicted with an iron broadsword, but initially appears with a copper sword. He talks formally, but occasionally inserts exclamations like "Jolly good!" or "By Jove!" like other Moonbrooke townsfolk. Like all other NPCs on the island of Moonbrooke, his idle animation is of him rubbing his arms to stay warm in the cold.

He has an intense fear and hatred of death, shown to act distraught when some of his allies die and screams his questions to the goddess over their graves; he himself is terrified of his own death and the sight of the deceased reminds him he is also mortal. He claims to seek to end the "accursed war" between monsters and humans on Moonbrooke. The war continues to rage on as all participants are followers of the Children of Hargon, who encourage the endless destruction brought by the endless war. Warwick openly opposes these beliefs when working with the Builder. He also seems to be close with Anessa, both being the King's advisors and training with her to become soldiers.

While his dialogue nearing his death alludes to him having a firm belief in the Children of Hargon, Anessa says on the Isle of Awakening that he would have loved the Builder's creations. It is unclear whether it was that Warwick had successfully deceived everyone into believing he loved building or if Warwick had been also lying about his "true" faith.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 edit

The Builder and Malroth meet Warwick shortly after arriving on Moonbrooke. After the Builder heals Anessa, he is enthusiastic about the prospect of repairing Moonbrooke castle.

As repairs on the castle progress, murders begin occurring in the night. Warwick, and everyone else, are worried about traitors in their ranks. The Builder is encouraged to seek the Mirror of Ra and does so. The mirror reveals that two skeletons and one hargonaut were among their ranks, and they are dispatched. Warwick urges the King to remain vigilant and implies that there may still be a human spy amongst their ranks as, allegedly, there were shadows spotted of men meeting with monsters. The Builder then gives the mirror to Anessa upon her request. Later, Warwick tells the builder it is ill-advised to question the townsfolk's loyalties, stating that "If there is a spy among us, we may have no choice but to wait for them to slip up..." Despite his suggestion, Warwick is quick to propose Anessa as a suspect but tells the Builder not to say anything. As the Builder seeks out the weaknesses of the enemy monsters, Warwick occasionally helps in these endeavors. During their search for the last weakness, the monsters are in possession of the Mirror of Ra and dispel their disguises. It is unknown who gave away the mirror, but suspicion immediately falls on Anessa and Warwick uses this to his advantage.

At several different points throughout the Moonbrooke storyline, after the Builder goes to sleep, the player is shown text cutscenes about someone giving details away to a monster. The spy featured is heavily implied to be Warwick, based on several personality details like their fear of death. The monster is likely his master, a wrecktor.

Eventually, the suspicions of a spy cause tensions to mount in the castle. Warwick tells the Builder that His Majesty had a request for a new dungeon, and that they may soon need to use it. After the dungeon is built, he tells them that there have been "developments" in deciding the first occupant of the newly built cell, apologises, and shortly afterwards Malroth is imprisoned. He then says that it was Anessa's proposal - that she was attempting to sever relationships to leave them weak for the monsters. Warwick privately tells the Builder that they will be able to free Malroth when they have relieved tensions. While he says that he wants to tell His Majesty the truth (of how Malroth is not a danger and has no need to be imprisoned), he excuses himself by calling it pointless. He says that "Anessa is the King's most trusted adviser. There is no way he would believe me over her." In reality, it was never Anessa's idea; did not know as to why they were in the dungeon at the time and later mentions that she was curious about Malroth's imprisonment, because she had never directly asked the King to take any action. Zara expresses her confusion as well, as Anessa would surely recognise Malroth's exceptional battle prowess as indisposable. Warwick's excuse as to why he did not speak up was a cover for himself because he, in fact had suggested Malroth's imprisonment.

Soon after, Atlas appears, and he leaves his army of monsters to fight the Moonbrooke Brigade. After battle, the King - having declared it was time to end the war - eventually has the Builder (accompanied by Warwick and Anessa) search for the three Orbs to power the Kazapple cannon, a weapon that will surely defeat Atlas. When it is time to search for the Orb of Heores, he has all the knights in the castle in charge of marching to Rendarak, which he describes as a place akin to Hell. Anessa voices her concern about having the castle abandoned by all its soldiers, but Warwick counters her quickly, asking sarcastically if she wanted this war to end or not. The soldiers eventually arrive at a beautiful valley, to the army's confusion. They eventually progress to the end of the valley where they find what used to be Midenhall castle and enter it. They encounter only strange illusions of people and an empty throne room. Upon entering the throne room they are ambushed by monsters. Before the fighting begins, it is evident that something is wrong with Warwick, as he does not draw his sword when the monsters appear. When the traitor is prompted by the leader of the monsters - the wrecktor - to take their place by its side, he walks over to the head of the monster group. This catches everybody off guard, and he says he has fulfilled his side of the deal while taunting the rest of the Moonbrooke Brigade. He says that his mission was "To fracture friendships, weaken the military, and ensure the construction of the Kazapple cannon—that it might eventually fall into the monsters' hands". The wrecktor is satisfied with this reveal and transforms Warwick into a silvapithecus. Warwick is then slain by the human army along with the rest of the monsters.

Before he dies, Anessa runs to his side and desperately tries to talk to him. He calls the world a lie, and that everyone would die no matter who won the war. When she pursues this topic, he says that one day, he realised that the world was an illusion, and he tried to speak with the King but he refused to listen. The Wrector found him afterwards and took advantage of his fear of death, promising him eternal life in monsterhood if he could earn it, which was why he betrayed Moonbrooke in the first place. He accepted the idea of being transformed into a monster and betraying his kingdom in exchange for being allowed to live.

Shortly after, Gerome thinks about the wrecktor's final words about how Moonbrooke had left the castle easy to attack and Anessa immediately tells the Builder that they should return to the castle without delay. She realises, upon return, that leaving the castle open to the monsters was a ploy from Warwick all along.

Abilities edit

Warwick is capable of using weapons and will assist the Builder in combat. He is able to train in training rooms, equip weapons in armouries and strategize in war rooms. He will also build blueprints.

He gains the standard abilities of a silvapithecus when he willingly becomes one, though his time as a monster is short lived as he is slain shortly afterwards.

Due to his betrayal and death, he can never be added to the player's party outside of the story segments where he does so of his own volition.

Origins edit

Warwick has lived on the isle Moonbrooke and participated in the never-ending war for his entire life. When he was young, his entire family was murdered by monsters, causing his hatred of death.

It is later revealed that the world that the Builder and Malroth are exploring is nothing but an illusion created by Hargon. Warwick is one of the illusions created to populate the illusory world.

Etymology edit

  • His English name, "Warwick", could have been inspired by the historical figure Richard Neville (aka Warwick the Kingmaker)[1]. The following explanation is largely condensed and summarized.

Richard Neville was a military commander who worked his way up the castle hierarchy of the House of York and also (partially) lost his family in war. He held numerous important ministrative roles and was considered to a right-hand man to his father-in-law's son, King Edward IV. After many different events more-or-less regarding small betrayals, he turned his back on the King and turned his attentions to the House of Lancaster, a historically opposing house that he had fought very feverently against. A rebellion was instigated by Neville that would see the death of the widow's father and his sons, but when he threw Edward IV into prison he did not have full backing of the elite. By 1470, Edward was released and Warwick was exiled. Afterwards, he sought an alliance with the Lancastrians. He was defeated later in a battle and his struggle for power came to an end.
  • His Spanish name, "Ludovico", could come from Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice (Othello for short)[2].

In the play, the military commander Othello is manipulated by his ensign, Iago, into suspecting his wife Desdemona of infedelity. While "Ludovico" does not come from the name "Iago", there is a figure called "Lodovico" that shows up in the play who is Desdemona's cousin.
  • Anessa and Warwick's French names ("Athéna" and "Martial") both derive from gods of war (Greek goddess "Athena"; Roman god "Mars").
  • His German name, "Hektor", could possibly have come from the Trojan warrior "Hector" in Greek mythology[3].

Hector was a Trojan prince and the greatest warrior for Troy during the Trojan War. He leads the Trojans and their allies in defense of Troy and kill countless Greek warriors, but is ultimately killed in single combat by Greek hero Achilles, who proceeds to drag his dead body around the city of Troy behind his chariot. Homer, a Greek author and poet, portrayed him as "peace-loving" and "thoughtful", "without darker motives".

Trivia edit

  • Anessa and Warwick may be a parallel to Dragon Quest XI's Hendrik and Jasper.
    • Both are pairs of knights whom so happen to be the two right-hand-men and close advisors to their Kings (the King of Moonbrooke/King Carnelian)
    • Both trained together for a long time before the events of their respective games.
    • Out of the pairs, one of the two (Anessa/Jasper) is the tactician and one (Warwick/Hendrik) is the swordsman.
    • One (Warwick/Jasper) betrays their kingdom (Moonbrooke/Heliodor) due to feeling unheard by their peers (Warwick's pleas for the King; Jasper's envy for Hendrik's glory) and promises from the monsters (the Wrecktor/Mordegon), eventually turning into a monster with grey skin and wings (a silvapithecus/Jasper Unbound).
    • This traitor is mentioned to advise their King to pursue a course of action that detriments their kingdom (not technically true in the case of Jasper).
    • The two in the pairs also parallel each-other. For Hendrik and Jasper, they represent yin and yang, with Hendrik's armour being black and Jasper's being silver. For Anessa and Warwick, their original stances on the war are vastly different to their final stance once the traitor is revealed; while Warwick is initially enthusiastic about building and winning the war, he later says that "it matters not who wins this accursed war" and sticking to the values of the Children of Hargon. On the other hand, Anessa initially appears to stick to the Children's beliefs but later reveals that she had always loved building since she was a child. Moreover, Anessa's main colour in her design is red, while Warwick's is blue, which are complementary colours on the colour wheel.
  • Warwick may also be a parallel to Dragon Quest X's Quard, being visually similar and also turning into an antagonist after fighting alongside the hero. However, unlike Quard, Warwick does not redeem himself.
  • After the events of the main game, completing all 45 Tablet Targets and completing all explorer's shores checklists, the player is able to bring Molly to the Isle of Awakening. In one of her dialogue lines, she mentions that she once saw a silvapithecus that was half human. It is unknown when exactly she saw this, but it is possible that it could have been Warwick as there are no other such cases of humans being so closely tied to monsterhood. How exactly he could have managed to become half-human later down the line is also a mystery.
  • When Warwick dies, the text that appears above his head reads "All my plans...ruined...". This is quite curious, as he has already completed all of his missions that were assigned to him. His "plans" could presumably have been to live forever as a monster (although that doesn't explain why he chose to fight the soldiers and risk death), as monsters seem to be able to outlive humans in terms of the aging process. For this reason, it is unlikely that monsters are able to actually respawn (other than those in the Undead family), and also because of how Anessa (and others) perceive monsters' deaths as irreversable.
  • The particles produced by Warwick upon death are much more prominent than that of the Wrecktor and other monsters, and the sound produced is much different.
