Downloadable Content
Downloadable content (usually shortened to DLC) refers to additional downloadable features that generally expand the experience a game offers in some way and can be obtained on the various digital storefronts the games are published on, either for free or for a charge. Most DLC in the Dragon Quest series is free, but there are exceptions.
The following list explains the kind of content available to each game.
Dragon Quest V
Smartphone version
The monster magnet, an item that doubles the chances of monsters joining the party, was added as DLC for this title. Originally DLC for the Japanese release, it was eventually permanently added to the game in an update in all markets.
Dragon Quest VII
3DS Remake
Downloadable stone tablets, which include 3 additional scenarios, new monsters, and new equipment.
While currently unavailable, they were archived.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined
Reimagined released with a few paid DLC that included exclusive outfits, special battle content, and early access to some useful items.
Dragon Quest VIII
3DS Remake
Connecting the game to the internet allowed players to get access to additional items and equipment, mainly unique weapons.
These are currently unavailable.
Dragon Quest IX
Special guests, DQVC shop, and 64 additional sidequests.
Worth noting that all the downloadable content in IX is already on the cart, connecting online just made it available to players. Currently unavailable through official means.
Dragon Quest X
Online Version
Each expansion adds new scenarios, characters, locations, quests, monsters, vocations and more. Starting in Version 5, the scenes are dubbed:
- Version 2 expansion (The Sleeping Hero and the Guiding Ally)
- Version 3 expansion ("Legend of the Ancient Dragon")
- Version 4 expansion ("The 5,000-year Journey to a Faraway Home")
- Version 5 expansion ("The Maiden of Thorns and the God of Destruction")
- Version 6 expansion ("Heroes of the Heavenly Stars")
- Version 7 expansion ("The Door to the Future and the Slumbering Girl").
- Version 8 expansion ("Lost Children of Time and Space")
Offline Version
- Version 2 Expansion (The Sleeping Hero and the Guiding Ally - Offline).
Dragon Quest XI
Dragon Quest XI has some DLC in both versions of the game.
Original PlayStation 4 & PC versions
Early access to certain items and equipment.
Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition
Additional items, equipment and outfits, voice drama DLC scenarios (pay-walled content exclusive to Japan), and access to DQVIII's overworld theme.
Dragon Quest Heroes
Additional slime-themed weapons.
Psaro as a playable character and some additional battle content was added to the game via free post-release updates.
Dragon Quest Heroes II
Additional monster-themed weapons.
Dragon Quest Builders
Builders 1 has had DLC in all its forms.
Console versions
Additional building blocks, items and blueprints.
Smartphone & PC versions
New tools, equipment and items. This brand new content for this version is all pay-walled content on the mobile version while included for free on the PC release.
Dragon Quest Builders 2
Builders 2 added additional blocks, tools, outfits, and items as DLC. There are three main sets of DLC for this game, which are pay-walled on PlayStation 4 and Switch, but included for free on the Xbox and PC releases. Some smaller sets were released for free or via other acquisition methods.
Dragon Quest Treasures
A set of three monsters and a few items is available. While it is pay-walled DLC, all it's contents are obtainable for free in the game.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince
There are three sets of pay-walled DLC for this game. These DLC give Psaro useful rewards to ease his quest, as well as new outfits for him to wear. All the DLC was later included free of charge in the PC and smartphone releases.
Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai
There are some pay-walled legacy outfits for Popp, Maam and Hyunckel inspired by classic Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation vocations.
