"Why does my Goddess remain silent? How long must I languish in misery? We served you so faithfully... Yet we died in agony. That terrible plague consumed my beautiful abbey. Oh, the memory... The pain! So much pain! And now you shall taste for a moment the agony that I have endured for an eternity. But fear not... for you shall be saved by the peaceful bliss of death!"
The Tortured soul is a monster in the series. Originally appearing as the boss of the Ruined Abbey in Dragon Quest VIII, it has become a regular monster in other games.
Tortured souls are zombified priests with jaundiced yellow skin that wear robes and a miter in various shades of purple and magenta trimmed with gold. On their right hand, they wear a ruby ring and carry a tall staff topped with a cracked skull which they use to focus their magic. It attacks by sending blasts of shadowy energy with its left hand. Their sunken eyes glow purple and they are missing a few teeth from their skulls. The former abbot is able to call forth more undead compatriots to aid it in battle, as well.
