The Sword of ruin is a cursed sword in the series.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

This sword has an unusual design with an axe head at the tip of its blade and appears to have been crafted from various bones and skulls. It is frequently one of the most powerful weapons in the game, sometimes even rivaling the power of legendary weapons. However, it is a cursed weapon and will randomly paralyse the wielder for a single turn in battle.

The Sword of ruin has an Attack bonus of +93 (+105 in remake versions), the single highest bonus in the game. It could only be equipped by the Prince of Midenhall in the NES version, but in the remakes, the Prince of Cannock can equip it, as well. It can be dropped by both Gigantes and Green dragon and can be sold for 11,250 gold coins.

The Sword of ruin has an Attack bonus of +105 and can be equipped by the Hero and Warriors. It has a 364 (4.7%) chance to inflict a critical hit when attacking, but has a 25% chance of randomly paralysing the wielder for one turn in battle. In the NES version, it can be purchased for 45,000 gold coins from Rimuldar. In all other versions, it can be found in the Craggy Cave. It also has a 1256 chance of being dropped by Bones of Baramos. It may be sold for 33,750 Gold Coins.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit | edit source]

The Sword of ruin has an Attack bonus of +110 and only be equipped by the Hero and Aishe. In the original Sony PlayStation version, it can be purchased from the Grand Slum final evolution of the Immigrant Town for 45,000 gold and sold for 22,500 gold. Sword of ruin can also be won as a prize from the Lucky Panel at Buccanham's Casino.

Dragon Quest X [edit | edit source]

The Sword of ruin was added to the game in Version 7.3 as a cosmetic item that players can use to change the appearance of any greatsword. Since it is only a cosmetic piece of equipment, it will not curse the player.

The Sword of ruin has an Attack bonus of +50. It is part of a set of cursed equipment, which in turn if you collect them all will complete a secret challenge in the final chapter of the game (alongside thanatos' shield and Wailer's mail, which can be found in the same dungeon) In order to complete the challenge you only need to find them (it isn't needed to equip them)

Dragon Quest Tact[edit | edit source]

The Sword of ruin is a S-rank sword that can be acquired as part of the original Dragon Quest II event by defeating Malroth at the Hall of Hargon on Hard mode. It can also be obtained by clearing floor 25 of the 1st Anniversary Tower. It has an ATK bonus of +30, a max HP bonus of +40 and has three slots for Alchemy Effects. But since it's a cursed piece of equipment, it has an AGL penalty of -40.
