—Ashlynn, upon meeting the Hero in Moonmirror Tower
Ashlynn (バーバラ, Bābara?, lit. Barbara) is a playable character in Dragon Quest VI. She is an amnesiac young woman invisible to normal people that the party encounters at the Moonmirror Tower. Ashlynn joins as a Mage and naturally gains the ability to use the powerful Magic Burst.
Ashlynn has gone on to appear in several other games in the series, starting with Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road II and often alongside her traveling companions from Dragon Quest VI. She is one of the special guest characters in Dragon Quest IX, and is a playable character in other games such as Theatrhythm Dragon Quest and as a special hero character in Dragon Quest Tact.
Appearance and Personality[edit | edit source]
Ashlynn wears a vivid blue tunic with a short skirt, charcoal sleeves with saffron gloves over them, a leather belt with a silver buckle, brown leather shoes with black socks, and a scarlet cape. She also wears dangling silver earrings. Her belt has a clip for holding her whip when she is not using it. She has purple eyes and wears her orange hair in a high ponytail with a silver hairband, with some strands over her forehead. Her hairstyle is known as pineapple hair (パイナップルヘアー, painappuru heā?) in Japan, a peculiar hairstyle where the hair is gathered at or near the crown and then scattered in all directions.[1]
Ashlynn joins the party with severe amnesia, and quickly grows close to them after they restore her visibility. Despite her memory loss, she boasts a plucky disposition and ever-energetic attitude regardless of the group's daunting tasks save for one notable exception. Ashlynn is never reserved when it comes to her emotions, letting the whole world know when's she's happy, sad, or laughing up a riot. She also isn't afraid to throw her weight around either, flat out demanding that the party help troubled townsfolk they come across in her party chat and considers her bossy side to be part of her charm.
While never outright stated, it is strongly implied that Ashlynn has feelings for the Hero. Over the course of their adventures together this transforms from a simple crush to genuine love, to the point that Ashlynn will make mental notes of the Hero's answers to Judith's questions in Weaver's Peak, along with other revealing remarks in her party chat.

Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road II[edit | edit source]
Ashlynn can be summoned to cast Magic Burst by scanning the Gringham whip special card. She rides in on the back of the mysterious dragon, then begins to gather magic power in each of her hands before unleashing it as a devastating explosion. Her title in the game is Great Witch (大魔女, Dai majo?). Ashlynn can also be challenged as a boss if the player's Mage and Priest levels are 50 or higher and defeating her unlocks the ability to become a Sage. Her abilities include Little Magic Burst and Moonlight.
Dragon Quest Tact[edit | edit source]
Ashlynn appears as an S-rank member of the Hero family as part of the original Dragon Quest VI event on her own banner alongside A-rank monsters of previous banners. She can participate in Carver's Battle Road as a party member and can be faced as a boss in the Wayfarers of Dreams special boss battle alongside Terry and Carver. As of the most recent update in the Japanese version, Ashlynn can be scouted from any limited banner.

Name Origin[edit | edit source]
- Ashlynn is either an Anglicisation of the Irish female name Aisling, which means "dream" or "vision", or a combination of the English name Ashley and the common suffix lynn.[2]Her Japanese name Barbara (バーバラ, Bābara?) is a female given name in several languages, including English, Italian, French, German, and Polish. It is derived from the Latin Barbarus, meaning "stranger" and "traveler from a foreign land". Both names reference the young woman's otherworldly origins and her status as a stranger in a strange land, with the former likely being selected for the international release due to Barbara being a common name in English-speaking territories.
In Other Languages[edit | edit source]
| Language | Translation | Meaning |
| バーバラ | Japanese for "Barbara", a female given name derived from the Latin barbarus, meaning "foreign, savage, strange".[3] | |
| Lucia | A female given name in several language, derived from the Latin word lux, which means "light". | |
| Laura | A female given name in several languages. From the Latin laurus, meaning "laurel". | |
| Rebekka | Form of the name Rebecca used in various languages such as German. Rebecca is a feminine name of Hebrew origin, possibly from a Semetic root meaning "join, tie, snare". | |
| Ashlynn | Same as English name. |
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- It is noted many times that Ashlynn is in love with the Hero, saying things such as "Hey Hero, I got a new outfit today. Do I look good in it?" or "Aah love, I know how she feels..." or "If I were her I'd pick you over Buddy, but...", with even the Hero's parents compliment them on being a cute couple. This is even supported in battle, as only she and the Hero cannot be removed from the party by any means.
- Ashlynn hopes to settle down and become a homemaker one day. This is evident in one of her early lucky dip actions and party chat after speaking to Alicia in the Upper Clearvale.
- Ashlynn's physical form is in fact the golden dragon, which took on the shape of a wondrous wyrm due to the young lady's incredible magic. Further details are explained on the dragon's page.
