The Plain clothes are a piece of clothing in the series. They are usually the weakest armour in the game and many characters often wear them at the beginning of their journey.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The plain clothes consist of a light yellow or beige tunic made of thick cloth and secured only with a blue belt around the waist. In earlier entries in the series, the plain clothes also included of a pair of trousers as well, even though there was no separate item slot for leg equipment. Plain clothes can be commonly found in the dressers and cupboards of villagers' homes in practically every game.

  • Due to text restrictions in the Game Boy Color remake, the plain clothes are simply known as Cloth with a symbol of armour besides it.

The Plain clothes have a Defence bonus of +2 and can be equipped by all three characters. The Princess of Moonbrooke joins the party with them equipped. They can be sold for 23 gold.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit | edit source]

The Plain clothes have a Defence bonus of +4 and can be equipped by all vocations. Any character created through Patty's Party Planning Place will come with them equipped.

The Plain clothes have a Defence bonus of +4 and can be equipped by all characters. They can be purchased at Zalenagrad for 10 gold and sold for 7 gold. The Hero, Borya, and Torneko wear them as part of their initial equipment.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit | edit source]

The Plain clothes have a Defence bonus of +4 and can be equipped by all human party members, as well as monster companions in the G, J, and P equipment groups. They can be purchased in Roundbeck during the Hero's youth for 30 gold and sold for 15 gold. The Hero is equipped with them at the beginning of the game.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit | edit source]

The Plain clothes have a Defence bonus of +4, a Style bonus of +2, and can be equipped by all party members, except for Slime allies (Goowain is an exception). They cannot be purchased anywhere, but they can be sold for 22 gold. The Hero is equipped with them at the start of the game and Gustodians can drop them.

The Plain clothes have a Defence bonus of +4, a Style bonus of +2, and can be equipped by all characters. They are part of both the Hero and Maribel's initial equipment. They can be purchased for 30 gold coins in Pilchard Bay, Estard, and L'Arca and sold for 15 gold coins.

Some more sets can be found in Ballymolloy in the past, Regenstein, L'Arca in the present, the Bandits' Base, Gröndal in the past, and Providence in the present. Plain clothes can be won as prizes from the Lucky Panel at the Casino.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit | edit source]

The Plain clothes have a Defence bonus of +4 and can be equipped by all party members. They can be purchased in Farebury for 30 gold and sold for 15 gold. The Hero has them equipped at the beginning of the game. Plain clothes can be upgraded to the Wayfarer's clothes using the Alchemy Pot by combining them with another set of Plain clothes.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai: A Hero's Bonds[edit | edit source]

The Plain clothes are 1★ clothes that can be equipped by all characters. At level 20, they have a Defence and Magical Defence bonus of +20. They are a starter piece of equipment and could occasionally be acquired from free Treasure Hunts.

  • The anime series Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei makes a humorous reference to the plain clothes in an imagine spot as being the bare minimum for an adventurer, along with the cypress stick and pot lid.
