The Shadow is a monster in the series.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Shadows are phantom-like fiends that haunt places like ruins and dungeons, hardly taking physical damage thanks to their insubstantial form. They have solid yellow eyes, horns, a pair of wings, claws, and a tail that seems to fade into the ground. They were originally coloured a dull blue due to the blank backgrounds on the NES games, but as of the sixth game it has become black to better match its name thanks to advancing hardware. Their dark blue colouration was brought back for the HD-2D Remake games. Shadows have an affinity for the cold, being capable of freezing adventurers with ice magic or exhalations of frigid air.

- Evil Jessica is able to summon shadows by ripping open the fabric of space with the sceptre, up to a total of six at once. These shadows are weaker than the ones faced later in the World of Darkness, lacking their resistance to damage and only being able to breathe out Cool Breath, but they can still be a nuisance once they outnumber the party.
