Kazapstrophe is the current English name of the Japanese ミナデイン, which had previously been localized as Kazapple in the fourth through seventh mainline games. The Kazapple name would simultaneously be used in the Joker and Joker 2 entries of the Dragon Quest Monsters spin-offs to refer to ジゴデイン, the highest-ranking Lightning spell in those titles, of which ミナデイン did not appear.
This spell was originally named Kazapple. However, there was another fourth-tier lightning spell called Kazapple on other games, which is actually ジゴデイン Jigodein in the original Japanese naming.
On DQ11, as both Minadein and Jigodein were present, they decided to name this one Kazapstrophe instead to lessen the confusion of two spells with the same name.

The Kazapple name would be applied once more to ミナデイン in the second Heroes game, thereafter it would be reserved for ジゴデイン to match the ka- and -le naming convention used by the other spell families. With both ミナデイン and ジゴデイン appearing in the eleventh mainline game, the localized name of Kazapstrophe was invented to separate the two spells in English.

Kazapstrophe is a Lightning-element spell that requires the cooperation of the whole party to cast.

Localization history[edit | edit source]

This spell was originally named Kazapple. However, there was another fourth-tier lightning spell called Kazapple on other games, which is actually ジゴデイン Jigodein in the original Japanese naming. On Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, as both Minadein and Jigodein were present, they decided to name this one Kazapstrophe instead to lessen the confusion of two spells with the same name.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit | edit source]

Kazapple is learned by the Hero at level 37 and deals 330~350 Lightning damage to one foe, requires 15 MP from every party member to cast. As such, it cannot be used if Alena, Ragnar McRyan, or Torneko Taloon are in the party.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit | edit source]

Kazapple is learned by Parry at level 38, and by the Conkuistador at level 60. It costs every party member 10 MP to cast but as Tuppence is the only human character to lack MP the requirements are much less strict for most party configurations. Because Parry cannot equip the duplic hat in the SFC version, the spell cannot be echoed.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit | edit source]

Kazapple is learned by reaching rank 8 of the Hero vocation, the Legend. The power has been double to 600~700 and costs every party member 10 MP as in before. Unlike in V, all human characters gain MP and thus the player is not limited by his or her party configuration. Kazapple has the quickest activation speed of any ability in the game, activating before Kaclang and Forbearance. The spell will only echo with the duplic hat in the original SFC version.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit | edit source]

Kazapple has all the parameters of the previous game, but due to the presence of powerful skills such as Blade of Ultimate Power it is sub-optimal to use in battle.

Dragon Quest X [edit | edit source]

ミナデイン appears briefly during the story of the fourth expansion of the game.

Kazapstrophe is used by the protagonist in version 5.5+ to defeat the Great Source of Darkness, Jagonuba. To perform this spell, the protagonist receives the power of all living beings on the planet (from residents of Astoltia, Nadragand and Netherworld) thanks to the help of Goddess Luciana. Once the energy is gathered, the survivor of Tenton uses Kazapstrophe with the help of all their summoned allies like Anlucia, Shaka, Estelle or Valeria. The massive spell fulminates Jagonuba, killing him on the spot.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit | edit source]

Kazapstrophe marks the first appearance of the ミナデイン spell after a 17 year absence, and is learned by the Hero as per tradition. Rather than requiring MP as before, the spell needs all four casters to be pepped up, and the Hero must already know Kazap. The power is dependent on the sum of the party's magical might. The spell starts out dealing 690~750 lightning damage to all foes, and starts increasing in power once the sum of the participants magical might reaches 527, peaking at dealing 1410~1470 damage when the total magical might of the users reaches 1986.

 • The numbers 527 and 1986 are a clever reference to the publishing date of the quest that started it all: May twenty-seventh, 1986.

An evil version of the spell is used by Calasmos during the final battle, known as Chaotic Kazapstrophe.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional[edit | edit source]

ミナデイン was added in the Professional version of the game. It drains the entire party's MP and is only marginally stronger than ジゴデイン, but the allies of the caster can act while the spell is used and thus has much greater utility than in previous games.

Terry's Wonderland 3D & Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit | edit source]

The spell has been tweaked so that Large-sized monsters can cast it by themselves.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road[edit | edit source]

ミナデイン has two versions, one for the Luminaries of the Legendary line seen in Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line and another for the Chosen of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen. In first version the three cousins are shown entering the scene by riding upon Empyrea's back, with the Prince of Midenhall channeling the power of the thunderbolt blade to contribute. There are two versions of the latter for the male and female Hero, with Healie aiding Ragnar by donating his MP. Psaro is also present in the group, but refuses to assist and merely observes.
