Shadows are phantom-like fiends that haunt places like ruins and dungeons, hardly taking physical damage thanks to their insubstantial form. They have solid yellow eyes, horns, a pair of wings, claws, and a tail that seems to fade into the ground. They were originally coloured a dull blue due to the blank backgrounds on the NES games, but as of the sixth game it has become black to better match its name thanks to advancing hardware. Their dark blue colouration was brought back for the HD-2D Remake games. Shadows have an affinity for the cold, being capable of freezing adventurers with ice magic or exhalations of frigid air.
Denizens of darkness that dwell where light dare not shine. When summoned to the human plane, they manifest as pure gloom, using their inherent coldness to freeze their fleshy foes
Born from the darkness, these creatures jump from shadow to shadow to sneak up on foes. They are completely unaffected by physical attacks.
Notable changes in the remake
Evil Jessica is able to summon shadows by ripping open the fabric of space with the sceptre, up to a total of six at once. These shadows are weaker than the ones faced later in the World of Darkness, lacking their resistance to damage and only being able to breathe out Cool Breath, but they can still be a nuisance once they outnumber the party.

Born from the darkness, these creatures jump from shadow to shadow to sneak up on foes. They are completely unaffected by physical attacks.
Notable changes in the remake
Like other monsters from the World of Darkness, shadows with strengthened attributes begin appearing throughout the world map after the fall of Black Citadel.
Shadows began appearing in Version 2.0 of the game. They are able to breathe out Freezing Blizzard and cast Crackle, as well as being able to call for backup from more of their kind.
These monsters are said to have been born in the depths of an unfathomably deep darkness. Adept at imitation, they can even forget their natural appearance if they spend long enough shadowing someone else.
Incorporeal creatures born from the deepest darkness, who silently stalk their prey before suddenly striking. They dwell in the darkness and shun the sun, but are oddly attracted to bright and breeze personalities.
Shadow appears as a C-rank monster of the Inorganic family that can be scouted normally from any banner. It can participate in the Dancing flame and Illusia's Battle Roads as a party member.
