For the monster vocation in Dragon Quest VII, see Barbatos (vocation).

Barbatos is a boss monster in Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen that has since become a regular enemy in the Dragon Quest series noteworthy for being a dangerous encounter in the late stage of a game.

Characteristics

Barbatos is one of Psaro the Manslayer's top generals and guards one of the four towers that maintain the barrier surrounding Castle Nadiria. He is a powerful spell caster, and with the exception of Aamon, possesses the most powerful magical capabilities of the four and often has an affinity for powerful explosive spells. His dialogue indicates that he is loyal to Psaro. Barbatos has the upper body of a solidly-built human man with a large pair of wings on his back, a huge pair of curved horns on his head, and pointed ears, while his lower body is that of a goat. His skin is light blue and his hair and the fur on his lower half is indigo or purple, depending on the game. He has a forked beard and the horns on his head are bronze-colored. When Barbatos reappeared in VII, he had tan-colored skin with brown fur on his lower half and grey hair and horns instead of the normal coloration.

A pair of these fiends appear near the summit of Mt. Zugzwang. In the room right before the lair of Grandmaster Nimzo, a treasure chest containing the Orichalcum fangs can be found. When the Hero attempts to open the chest, the pair break down the door and engage the party in battle. The cannot be recruited in this battle due to the polluting evil of Mt. Zugzwang, but they can join the party when found again as a normal encounter in Estark's Labyrinth.

Etymology

Barbatos is the name of a duke of hell described in the Lesser Key of Solomon, being described as a humanoid who can speak with animals, conciliates rulers, and predict the future. The demon's name is derived from the Latin Barbatus, meaning "Bearded". The localization team did their demonological homework, as this perfectly describes the monster.
