The shadow is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, introduced in Dragon Quest III.
It is a black, insubstantial, phantom-like creature. It was originally colored a dull blue due to the blank backgrounds on the NES games, but as of the sixth game it has become black to better match its name thanks to advancing hardware.
Characteristics
These phantom-like fiends haunt remote ruins such as the Moonmirror Tower and the darkness of caves and dungeons, hardly taking physical damage thanks to their fading form. Screeching as they slash with ghastly claws, shadows are a spooky sight for unsuspecting adventurers. They have an affinity for the cold, being capable of freezing adventurers solid with ice magic or letting loose a cool breath to bathe the party in a chilly wicked wind.

| Notable changes in the remake
Evil Jessica is able to summon shadows by ripping open the fabric of space with the sceptre, up to a total of six at once. These shadows are weaker than the ones faced later in the World of Darkness, lacking their resistance to damage and only being able to breathe out Cool Breath, but they can still be a nuisance once they outnumber the party.

Like other monsters from the World of Darkness, shadows with strengthened attributes begin appearing throughout the world map after the fall of Black Citadel.
Shadows began appearing in Version 2.0 of the game. They are able to breathe out Freezing Blizzard and cast Crackle, as well as being able to call for backup from more of their kind.
