Lava lumps can be collected from Newid Isle and the Wyrmsmaw, found in rank 2 treasure chests, or dropped by Bagmas, Live lavas, Magmalices, Scarlet fevers, Admirers, Terrorhawks, and the Master of Nu'un. Lava lumps are used in the following alchemy recipes:

Dragon Quest X

Lava lump is used as an ingredient in the use of equipment and furniture crafting. It can be purchased from a material store for 200 gold, picked up from sparkly spots, or dropped by various monsters, including Rockbombs, Grillerpillars, and Face invaders.

Dragon Quest XI

Lava lumps can be received from sparkly spots in the Hotto Steppe, Mount Huji, and the Hotto Steppe - Northern Whale Way Station. They have a 116 chance of being dropped by Face invaders, Lava lamplings, and Rockbombs, and a 132 chance of being dropped by Firebirds and Hot dogs. Lava lumps are used in the following recipes for the Fun-Size Forge:

Dragon Quest Swords

Lava lumps can be used in sword tempering for creating fire-elemental swords and the Aurora blade. It can be dropped by any kind of fire-aligned monster such as Firespirits and Rockbombs.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below

Lava lump can be dropped by Rockbombs and Grinades and can be received as a reward for defeating the Green dragon with silver clear time. It can be used to create Tough guy tattoo and the quick recipe for the Strength ring in the Alchemy Pot and can be sold for 11 gold.

Dragon Quest Heroes II

Lava lumps are used as an ingredient to improve various accessories. Once again, they can be dropped by Rockbombs and Grinades.
