Floating enemies
Floating enemies (浮遊系, Fuyū-kei?, lit. Floating-type) is a classification of monsters in the series that share a vulnerability to certain spells and abilities, such as Woosh-type spells, Flying Knee, and Wing-Clipper. It was first introduced in Dragon Quest VI.
Starting with Dragon Quest IX, floating enemies gained an immunity to Leg Sweep, which attempts to knock the target down for a turn, and will occasionally resist or outright ignore the effects of Crag-type spells.
Unlike other monster families, there is no single unifying theme to the group aside from the aforementioned weakness and resistance. In certain games, there are several monsters that are classified as floating in addition to their own monster family.
The term "floating" is not always accurate, as several monsters are shown with their feet planted firmly on the ground and yet are classified as such, where as some monsters that hover in place (such as the Wraithwand) are exempt.
