Zapple is a lightning spell introduced in Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation. It is a mid-tier of the Lightning spell family between Zap, Kazap, and Kazapple.

Localization history[edit | edit source]

This spell was originally named Zap. However, with the arrival of a lower-tier Dein spell, they moved the name Zap to that one, and renamed Raidein Zapple.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit | edit source]

Zap is learned by Hero at level 26. The spell will damage a single enemy with between 70~90 damage, and will cost 8 MP to cast. Ortega also uses the spell in his fight with King Hydra.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit | edit source]

Zapple is learned by the Hero at level 24 if his or her wisdom exceeds 94 points. It costs 8 MP and deals up to 91~117 damage to one foe.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit | edit source]

Zap is learned by the Hero at level 25, though his tutor in Hidden Valley planned to teach him the spell sooner. The spell functions identically to its Aliahan counterpart, though it costs only 4 MP to cast.

Zap can be used by togres for 70~90 damage.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit | edit source]

Zap's range improves from this installment. Specifically, the spell conjures a small lightning storm that targets all enemies instead of a single bolt. The spell costs a mere 6 MP to cast, and deals between 70 and 90 damage.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit | edit source]

Zap is learned by the Hero after his awakening. Other characters can learn it by advancing to rank 3 of the Hero vocation. It behaves as it did in the previous game.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit | edit source]

Zap is learned when a character reaches rank 4 of the Hero vocation, rank 8 of the Delusionist, and rank 5 of the Slaughtomaton monster vocations. As expected, it behaves as it did two games ago.

It can be cast by the enemies nut knight, ginormoose, and togre for 70~90 damage.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit | edit source]

Zap is learned by investing 48 points into Eight's Courage skill. The spell will jolt all enemies with 40~56 points of lightning damage, and will grows in power once Eight's Wisdom surpasses 65. The spell will deal 72~88 damage (barring resistances) once the character's Wisdom reaches 150.

It is also used by the enemies Empyrea, Statue of Hero, and Head of state for 56~72 damage.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit | edit source]

The Hero can learn Zapple for 12 skill points by steeling himself with the Luminary panel in his character builder after it has been expanded in the second act. It is a hidden panel, requiring at least four of the surrounding skills to be learned first. It costs 22 MP to cast and will deal 146~166 damage to a group of enemies, with the maximum damage hitting for 314~344 at 244 magical might.

Dragon Quest Monsters 1 & Dragon Quest Monsters 2[edit | edit source]

Zap, as the spell was referred to in the Eidos localization, deals 70~90 damage to all enemies for 10 MP. To learn the spell, a monster needs to have the natural capacity to do so if it hasn't been bred into it, as well as being at level 15 with a wisdom stat of 130.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit | edit source]

Zapple's base damage is 66~74, and will reach its limit of 234~242 once the caster's Wisdom hits 699. It costs 6 MP to cast, and is learned from several skill trees.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit | edit source]

Zapple has a base range of 66~73 damage and a maximum range of 243~249. It can no longer be learned from Sage. It can now be learned from:

Terry's Wonderland 3D & Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit | edit source]

Zapple costs 6 MP and has a base range of 66~73. The power will increase as the monster's Wisdom stat rises over 100, dealing 228~252 at 699 Wisdom.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit | edit source]

Zapple has the same aspects as in the previous two Monsters games.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit | edit source]

Zapple costs 13 MP and is learned through the Just Ruler, Zap Afficionado, and Zap Virtuoso talents. It has a base power of 35 and will deal an average of 165 damage at 499 wisdom.

Zapple is the second tier spell of both Luceus and Aurora and can be learned by investing 10 skill points. By charging up their Zap spell for a short time, they can cast Zapple for 14 MP, which summons lightning bolts to strike down enemies in front of them. As the two level up more, they will be able to upgrade the spell and learn Kazap. Also, like all lightning spells and techniques, Zapple can short circuit monsters from the machine family.

Dragon Quest Treasures[edit | edit source]

Zapple sends out a bolt of lightning that can damage a single enemy multiple times if positioned correctly, and costs 11 MP to cast. It is learned by fiery draglings, jade slimes, red giants, she-slimes, and Elys.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit | edit source]

Zapple can be learned naturally by ewwnicorn at level 22, silvapithecus at level 24, raving lunatick at level 36, and Lime slime at level 42. It costs 16 MP to use, has a range of three squares away from the user, and deals moderate Zap-type spell damage to one enemy. It can also be taught to any unit by using an ability scroll.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit | edit source]

Zapple appears as the Hero's side special move in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, in which it costs 18 MP to cast and hits twice: the first for 6% and the second for 14%. It is a quick electrical attack with good range and a disjointed hitbox, meaning it cannot be reflected or absorbed. Holding the special button down will turn Zap into Zapple, and holding the special button down for longer will turn this move into Kazap.
