Erik
"A young man who has abandoned his lucrative life of crime to team up with the Luminary. He managed to sneak into Heliodor Castle and steal the Red Orb, but was eventually apprehended and thrown into the dungeons. After helping our Hero escape from his cell, he joined him on his travels...for not entirely selfless reasons."

Erik (カミュ, Kamyu?, lit. Camus) is a character in Dragon Quest XI. He is a former Thief who becomes a companion to the Hero early in the story after abandoning his life of crime.
Appearance and Personality[edit | edit source]
Erik is a young man with blue eyes and slicked back, spiky cyan hair that has a single forelock. His 'blue, spiky hair' is his favorite trait about himself and he has a tendency to run his hands through his hair when he's excited. [1] He has a single gold hoop earring on each ear and wears purple beads around his neck. His clothes are relatively simple, wearing a hooded dark green tunic with lacing that exposes his chest, a red sash tied around his waist, dark blue trousers, fingerless gloves, and leather shoes worn with orange socks that are held up with string. He carries a scabbard with a knife on his sash, which is his prized possession.
Erik is has a troubled past that he does not speak openly of, and his criminal career has led him to rub elbows with the shadier sides of society. Despite his aloof exterior, Erik has a kind and compassionate heart, as shown when trouble happens with friends and family. While he is sometimes quick to jump to conclusions, he is also quite perceptive, tending to connect the dots quickly. He is also quick on his feet, shown in cutscenes where others are knocked over while he gracefully returns to a stronger position. These qualities came naturally to him from years of travelling and guides the Luminary along his journey. Erik is always there to support the Luminary and his faith in the man is unshakable. In cutscenes and party talk dialogue, he is shown to push the Luminary in the right direction instead of taking time to smell the roses. Erik has a tendency to bicker with Veronica, who refers to him as an idiot. However, the two of them are more alike than not and share a unique bond of affection. His weapons of choice consist of Knives, one-handed Swords, and Boomerangs, and he is even capable of dual wielding weapons.
Appearances[edit | edit source]
Dragon Quest X [edit | edit source]
Erik was added as an NPC to the MMO as a promotional event for the "S: Definitive Edition" version of XI being launched in Japan. He gives the player a short quest, and upon completing it rewards his outfit as a cosmetic armor set.

Dragon Quest Treasures[edit | edit source]
Erik is the deuteragonist of Dragon Quest Treasures, alongside his younger sister Mia. The game begins with the two sneaking around a viking vessel for a bit of fun before rescuing two unusual creatures from a cage on the main mast of the ship. The siblings flee from the ship on a smaller boat with their new friends in tow, and after exploring an uncharted island and retrieving a pair of incredible dirks they are sucked through a teleportal to the floating archipelago of Draconia suspended high in the sky.
The children are pulled into the different world separately and are deposited far apart, with Mia and Porcus having to rescue Erik and Purrsula from a Heartless hunter at the top floor of the abandoned factory in The Paternoggin. Reunited, the pair of daggers the children possess react with an abandoned train at the zenith of the building and the two depart for Eggshell Island. From there, the quartet embark on a colossal treasure hunt spanning the entire island chain, competing with rival factions such as the villainous Thunderous Plunderers and the friendlier Sylphanian Expedition. Erik is partnered with Purrsula, who perches on his shoulder when at rest.
- Note that the story of Dragon Quest Treasures is completely divergent to the story of Dragon Quest XI and should not be accepted as Erik's proper backstory.
Other Languages[edit | edit source]
In English, his name "Erik" likely comes from the Norse Viking explorer Erik the Red[2]. This also may be referenced in his "Pirate King" outfit, which is red.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- In the English voice acting, he has a distinguishable Scandinavian accent due to his Viking upbringing. His voice actor, Gunnar Cauthery, is Icelandic.
- In Japanese, he calls the Luminary "相棒" (Aibō, "相棒"?), roughly meaning a partner that you have an extremely close attachment to and share a history with; there is no direct translation in English which carries this connotation, so it has been localised to "partner".
- Erik calls Veronica "チビちゃん" (Chibi-chan, "チビちゃん"?), meaning "little one" ("short stuff" in English), and in turn she calls him "ひよっこちゃん" (Hiyokko-chan, "ひよっこちゃん"?), meaning "little chick" ("idiotic" in English).
- Erik also calls Sylvando the equivalent of "old man". Sylvando is, however, unfazed by this.
- Erik refers to himself with the first-person pronoun "俺" (Ore, "俺"?), even during his period of amnesia in Act Two where he begins to refer to the Hero and Rab with honorifics.
- Erik relieves stress by exercising and working up a sweat.
- Erik's favourite food is wild traveler's stew.
- When he was still a slave for the Vikings, they forced him to do all the cooking for them, which is why he is so good at cooking at campfires but not so much in an actual kitchen.
- If the player chooses to live with Erik as a reward for completing Drustan's Labyrinth, he tells the player in off-handed dialogue that he plans to work on his culinary skills whenever he has the chance to.
- From October 19th to December 13th, 2019, Erik's wild stew[3] was available as a special item on the menu at the real-life Luida's Bar in Tokyo in order to commemorate the release of Dragon Quest XI S. It is similar to pot-au-feu and has slowly simmered beef, potatoes, onions, and cabbage.
- Thinking about his past with the Vikings puts him in a weird mood, but he pushes it behind him, saying that it is not worth dwelling over.
- His personal motto is "tomorrow is another day".
- As part of his daily routine, he sharpens his favourite knife and maintains his thieving tools.
- The thing he wants most at the moment is a treasure map left behind by a legendary pirate.
- Erik's height is 165 cm or 5' 5" and he weighs 55 kilograms (121 lbs). He is insecure of his height and chugs milk in an attempt to grow taller, seen in his shypox lines.
- After the world is saved, he would like to travel with world with Mia for a while before bringing her to the mini medal academy so she can pursue an education like Erik was not able to. He wants her to be making friends there, but also figures she might hate anything akin to school.
- His favourite place in all of Erdrea is the cliff where he and the Luminary jumped off of.
- Interestingly, Erik has somewhat of a fear of heights; in Act Two party talk at the Luminary's Landing in Arboria, he mentions that while he was waiting for Serena and the Luminary he took a quick look at the side of the cliff, nearly blacking out when he saw how high up they were. However, he is quick to defend himself, saying that a drop like that would even melt the mind of someone like the hard-headed Hendrik. Erik shares this fear of heights with Jade and Serena.
- All of Erik's pep powers include the Luminary.
- While he's aware of his popularity with the ladies, even receiving a love letter from a student of the L'Académie de Notre Maitre des Médailles, Erik doesn't seem to be interested in love or marriage and instead seems happy for now travelling with the Luminary.
- His preferred romantic interest is, fittingly, stated to be "not worth mentioning/nothing special".
- Surprisingly, Erik is the party member with the third-least amount of charm at level 99 (250), with only Veronica (230) and Rab (170) below him.
- Erik is the second major Dragon Quest character to be depicted as left-handed after Angelo of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. Single weapons are always held in his left, while his dual-wielding skill makes it clear that his left hand is dominant. In addition, many cutscenes showing him favouring his left hand to use or hold everyday items.
- Erik has several homages to previous Dragon Quest series games:
- Erik is similar to Yangus of Dragon Quest VIII, being the second ex-thief in the series to join as the first party member. Furthermore, they both have soft spots for a certain person close to them (Mia and Red), bicker with a cursed person (Veronica and King Trode) and seek atonement for past actions.
- Erik's hairstyle and general appearance is very similar to that of the sixth hero, and this is brought up when the party visits Weaver's Peak in the Echo Chamber of Tickington, where he comments that people there kept on looking at him strangely.
- Erik and the Hero escape captivity by jumping off a cliff, like how the Hero and Harry does in Dragon Quest V.
- He teams up with a healslime during his time travelling alone, like Ragnar in Dragon Quest IV.
- He sacrifices his memories in exchange for great power like Terry does in Dragon Quest VI. Indignus and Dhuran of their respective games look similar as well; however, while Erik wants this power to defeat Indignus, Terry exchanged the his memories with Dhuran.
- Erik has the most amount of total costumes available among the male party members, due to the option of having his hair exposed or covered.
- Counting variants of a costume as the same one, Erik has the least out of any party member.
- Erik is the only party member to initially join the party for not-entirely-selfless reasons.
- Despite Veronica insisting that Erik lost the mixed martial arts fight in Octagonia against Jade and Rab due to being distracted by Jade's allure, the real reason (outside of plot relevance) is likely because Erik's skillset is more suited towards heavy set-up for immensely impressive returns. However, in an MMA competition, Jade's fast-paced consistent damage output would have had the upper hand against him.
- Before the Luminary goes back in time in the postgame, Erik will consistently mention that the party should go south of Octagonia, even after most emotional scenes. In the original Japanese version, it translates roughly to a very simple "Let's go south of Octagonia", which became a running gag with the Japanese community. The only time Erik does not have this dialogue is in Sniflheim and the Viking Hideout, where another character takes on this role instead.
- Erik is capable of the most damage in the game without hacking, where a glacial golem at the Sniflheim Whale Way Station can occasionally use Forbearance alongside six luminous lamplings. Erik can then use Double Down on the golem.
- Erik is the only party member that is able to have both hands deal the same amount of damage in battle, through unlocking the Dually Deadly secret panel in his Swords skill tree in his character builder, which is available after saving Mia in Act Two and after talking to Elder Eegoltap in postgame.
- His Agility at level 99 is the highest among all human characters in the Dragon Quest series series.
- Even during his state of amnesia, he has separate party talk dialogue for every scene, even all of the pastwords in Tickington.
- The Japanese Definitive Edition voice drama「ああ・・・青春のメダ女文化祭」("Ah... The Medal Girls' Cultural Festival of Youth") features a stage play that the party participates in. Erik is cast as a captured damsel in distress, alluding to how he was captured by enemies on four separate occasions, the most out of anyone in the game.
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he is referenced in spirit battles as a minion, where Link's frequent Boomerang is in reference to Erik's Boomerang skill tree. It may also have been inspired by the fact that traditionally, both characters wear green tunics, and Erik is able to wield a Sword like Link can.
- When Erik is afflicted by Sultry Dance in battle, he performs a lively dance, which includes a moonwalk or backslide.
- Each of the Luminary's companions represents one of the vocations in Dragon Quest III. Erik represents the Thief.
