There are a total of five starting vocations in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow: Warrior Mage, Priest, Martial Artist, and Thief. A few month after the release of the game, the advanced vocations Paladin, Sage and Ranger were added.

Similar to other mobile games like Dragon Quest of the Stars or Dragon Quest Walk, a vocation defines all initial attributes of a character such as stat growth and party function, which can then be customized by the player via stat memories and equipment.

Changing vocations[edit | edit source]

The option to change vocations is unlocked upon reaching adventurer rank 7, and can be freely done in the Party menu. Doing so removes the equipment of the character (including memories too) and resets the memories slotted in the character's vocation tree.

Advanced vocations require reaching at least level 50 in two vocations:

  • Sage: Mage + Priest
  • Paladin: Warrior + Priest
  • Ranger: Martial Artist + Thief

Vocation tree[edit | edit source]

Smash Grow features vocation trees that allow players to customized and enhance their characters. This feature is unlocked upon reaching adventurer rank 8. Each vocation tree includes node that grant stat bonues, unlocks and improvement to vocation passive skills, and memory slots. These slots can be filled using S rank memories of the specified color, and if certain conditions are met, they grant unique stat boosts to the character.

Most of the unlocked stat booses are only for that specific vocation, but "hero" stat bonuses are permanent stat boosts for the character.

Each vocation has a set of exclusive passive skills, and the advanced vocations have two available vocational blessings, unlockable through the tree. Note that only one of them can be equipped at a time.

Regarding advanced vocations, it's worth noting that they can take advantage of vocation-specific bonuses of their required basic vocations. For example, Erdrick's Armour (Top) grants Defence +5 only to Warriors, but as the Warrior vocation is a requeriment for the Paladin vocation, Paladins also get the defence boost when equipping this armour.

Weapon preferance[edit | edit source]

This table shows the weapon types prefered by each class. Any vocation can equip any weapon in this game, but equipping a prefered weapon type grants valuable stat boosts.
