Holy water is an item in the series. When used, it temporarily reduces the encounter rate of weaker enemies. In later games and remakes, it can be used in battle to inflict a small amount of damage to a single enemy.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

Holy water allows the player to avoid encounters with weaker enemies for 64 steps when used on the field. In this game, the effectiveness of the holy water is based on the location where it is used. In battle, using a phial of holy water deals 10~15 damage to a single enemy and deals a fixed 1 point of damage to Metal slimes. It is consumed upon use. Holy water can be purchased for 20 gold each from Roundbeck, Coburg, Fortuna, Hay, Zoomingale, Mostroferrato, Stockenbarrel, and Helmunaptra and sold for 15 gold (10 in the remakes). One can be found in a pot at Faerie Lea. It has a ¹⁄₁₆ chance of being dropped by Powie yowie, Thaumaturge, and Epipany, as well as a ¹⁄₃₂ chance of being dropped by Ghost.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation

Holy water allows the player to avoid encounters with weaker enemies for 64 steps on both the field and in dungeons. When used as a tool in battle, it deals 10~15 damage to a single enemy. However, in the Super Famicom version, it can no longer be used to deal damage to metal slimes, unlike the previous game. Holy water can be purchased 20 gold each from Haggleton during the bazaar, Wellshire, and Somnia of both the Upper World and Lower World, Ghent, Scrimsley, Howsworth, Clearvale, Mt. Snowhere, and Sorceria. It can be sold for 15 gold. Some phials can be found at the Forest Chapel, Somnia of the Lower World, Amor, the Houses North of Arkbolt, Aridea, Clearvale of the Upper World, and Felonia.

It has a ¹⁄₃₂ chance of being dropped by She-slime, a ¹⁄₆₄ chance of being dropped by Lips and Cumaulus, and a ¹⁄₁₂₈ chance of being dropped by Animated armour.

• In remake versions, holy water once again is able to deal a fixed 1 point of damage to metal slimes.

Holy water will prevent encounters with weaker enemies for a short amount of time when used in the field and in dungeons. When used as a tool in battle, it deals 10~15 damage to a single enemy and 1 point of damage to metal slimes. It is consumed upon use. Holy water can be purchased for 20 gold each from the item shops at L'Arca, Frobisher in the past, Greenthumb Gardens, Wilted Heart, Pilgrim's Rest, Pilgrim's Perdition, Alltrades Abbey in the present, the Desert Palace in the present, Al-Balad, El Ciclo, Hardlypool, Wetlock in the past, Hubble, Aeolus Vale in the present, Buccanham, and the Divine Shrine. It can be sold for 10 gold.

Some phials can be found at La Bravoure, El Ciclo, Regrette-Rien Convent, and Nottagen. One phial can be received by speaking to a nun at the Cathedral of Light. It has a ¹⁄₆₄ chance of being dropped by Epipany, a ¹⁄₁₂₈ chance of being dropped by Tongue fu fighter and Bad egg, and a ¹⁄₂₅₆ chance of being dropped by Muddy hand.

• In the Nintendo 3DS version, holy water now deals 1~2 damage to metal slimes. It has a ¹⁄₃₂ chance of being dropped by Ghost, and a ¹⁄₆₄ chance of being dropped by [[Cumaulus] and Religious nut.

Holy water will temporarily prevent weaker monsters from noticing the party when used on the world map and in dungeons, similar to Dragon Quest XI. When used at sea, it will prevent encounters with weaker enemies. It is consumed upon use. Unlike previous versions, holy water can no longer be used during battle. It can be purchased for 30 gold each from item shops at L'Arca, Frobisher, Pilgrim's Rest, Precipice Pass, Alltrades Abbey, Al-Balad, the Desert Temple, Hardlypool, Wetlock, Wilted Heart, Rucker, Hubble, Aeolus Vale, Buccanham Palace, and the Divine Shrine. It can be sold for 15 gold. It can be dropped by Tongue fu fighter and Muddy hand. Holy water is a 1♦ prize from the Lucky Panel at Pilgrim's Rest.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Holy water can be made in the Alchemy Pot and can be mixed to create several items, as well.

Dragon Quest Builders

Holy water bottles can be crafted in the final chapter and in free play mode in the Diviner's alter using pure water.

It's primary use is for purifying the cursed land of Tantegel. By doing so, circular areas of 9x9 blocks can be restored to their former glory. Purification is key to obtaining certain materials needed to craft new block types, items and equipment.

Aside from its main use, the holy water can be used to craft other items like the Sheen salts -that remove cursed equipment- and the Yggdrasil Essence -which revives the player instantaneously if they had it in their inventory-.

Holy water is Treasure No. 285 in the Items category and can be found on the Paternoggin. Its base value is 20,000 gold. There is also a Treasure known as the Empty Vial.

Captain N: The Game Master

Kevin Keene/Captain N and Princess Lana purchased this at the weapon shop along a map to the Cave of the Axe knight as they're the only thing left. Though the price for the water is unspecified, Kevin and Lana were able to get it for 6 Gold Coins as the shopkeeper considered it a hero's discount.

Unlike Dragon Quest, the effect of the water is that it can be used against evil magic. It's ultimately used to remove the Cursed necklace from Simon Belmont.
