Souped-up skills
Souped-up skills (超絶技 Chōzetsu Waza, "Super techniques") are powered-up versions of skills and spells introduced in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. They are unlocked upon obtaining the Soul Sigil and can only be used in dire situations (less than 50% HP) or when the character is under specific conditions. The specific conditions are unique per each character.
The name "souped-up skills" is a misnomer, as spells are also included in this category.
Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake[edit | edit source]
The powerful techniques are unlocked upon creating the Soul Sigil in the Faerie Village.
The souped-up skills can be triggered when the hero has less than half his maximum HP or when he is under the effects of the Reheal spell or the Focus Pocus ability. To use a souped-up skill, the player must select a spell or ability that can be souped-up and hold down the left face button while still on the menu. A green pattern will appear under the technique's name, activating the souped-up skill once the pattern has fully appeared.
| Name | Base technique | In-game description | Activation condition |

| Skysplitter | Gust Slash | "An awesome assault that rends the air itself in two. Highly effective against undead, amorphous, and material family monsters." | HP below 50%, or being under the effect of Focus Pocus. |

| Double Dragon Slash | Dragon Slash | "A targeted attack that's twice as nice against the scariest, scaliest foes." | HP below 50%, or being under the effect of Focus Pocus. |
| Gyrfalcon Slash | Falcon Slash | "Four swift slashes unleashed on a single enemy." | HP below 50%, or being under the effect of Focus Pocus. |
| Lightning Storm | Kazap | "Thunderbolts thrash all enemies sometimes paralyzing them to boot." | HP below 50%, or being under the effect of Focus Pocus. |
| Pincushion | Defending Champion | "Prepares the caster to defend and counter-attack any incoming attacks for a turn." | HP below 50%, or being under the effect of Reheal. |

| 0 Zone | Magic Barrier | "Allows a character to cast spells and abilities without using MP for a while!" | HP below 50%, or being under the effect of Reheal. |
| Achilles' Wheel | Fizzle | "Forms a magic circle that lowers a group of enemies' defence and magical resistance." | HP below 50%, or being under the effect of Reheal. |
| Gigagash | Gigaslash | "A secret technique that's only available when princess Gwaelin has been empowered by Rubiss in the Shrine of Rain." | Receiving Gwaelin's prayer. |
| Erdrick's Fire | Kasizz | "A secret technique that's only available when princess Gwaelin has been empowered by Rubiss in the Shrine of Rain." | Receiving Gwaelin's prayer. |
Note that Gigagash and Erdrick's Fire can only be used when Princess Gwaelin has been powered-up by Goddess Rubiss and prays for her Hero's victory in battle, which is triggered at random when she accompanies him. This can be accomplished by returning to Castle Tantegel as soon as the player obtains the magic key in Rimuldar to take the Sunstone from the Hermit dwelling in the castle, and then not return to Tantegel Castle until the Dragonlord has been slain.
Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit | edit source]
Souped-up skills are also present in II. This time, since the game has four different playable party members, the activation requirements for souped-up skills depends on the characters. To activate one, the character must either be at 50% or below max HP, or fulfill one of the below conditions (depending on whether it's an offensive or a support spell/ability).
| Character | Condition for offensive spell | Condition for support spell |
|---|---|---|
| Prince of Midenhall | Being under Focus Pocus | Having two stages of defence increase |
| Prince of Cannock | Being under Dodgy Dance | Being under Reheal |
| Princess of Moonbrook | Being under Wild Side | Being under Snap, Crackle, Poof |
| Princess of Cannock | Being under Dodgy Dance | Being under Absorb Magic |
The list of the different souped-up skills available by character is as follows:
