The '''magic shield''' is a recurring shield in the ''Dragon Quest'' series. It is designed to guard against harmful magic and elemental damage, hence the whimsical design.

In Japanese, the magic shield is known by two different names: マジックシールド (''Majikku shīrudo''), written in hiragana and only appearing in ''Dragon Quest V'' and its remakes, and まほうのたて (''Mahō no tate''), which is used for all of its other appearances. However, even in the Japanese Official Guide Books, both shields are known as Magic Shield in English.
*The original design from ''Dragon Quest V'' is a round buckler made of reddish-purple metal with a gold border and a yellow gemstone at its center. There are various magical symbols inscribed in gold and black throughout the shield.
*The design from ''Dragon Quest VIII'' is very similar, but the shield is now in an oval shape and in a lighter purple colour with a blue gemstone.
The magic shield is designed to protect the wielder from attack spells and is lightweight, allowing it to be equipped by various magical vocations. In later games, the shield also grants a small bonus to the wielder's spellcasting capabilities.

In Japanese, the magic shield is known by two different names: マジックシールド (Majikku shīrudo), written in hiragana and only appearing in Dragon Quest V and its remakes, and まほうのたて (Mahō no tate), which is used for all of its other appearances. However, even in the Japanese Official Guide Books, both shields are known as Magic Shield in English.

  • The original design from Dragon Quest V is a round buckler made of reddish-purple metal with a gold border and a yellow gemstone at its center. There are various magical symbols inscribed in gold and black throughout the shield.
  • The design from Dragon Quest VIII is very similar, but the shield is now in an oval shape and in a lighter purple colour with a blue gemstone.

The magic shield is designed to protect the wielder from attack spells and is lightweight, allowing it to be equipped by various magical vocations. In later games, the shield also grants a small bonus to the wielder's spellcasting capabilities.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit | edit source]

The Magic shield has a Defence bonus of +25, reduces damage taken from enemy spells by 25%, and can be equipped by the Hero, Warriors, Mages, Priests, Merchants, Gadabouts, Thieves, and Sages. It can be purchased for 2,000 gold from Baharata, Mur, and Persistence, and sold for 1,500 gold. It is also the most protective shield that a Mage can equip.

The Magic shield has a Defence bonus of +22, and reduces damage taken from Frizz, Sizz, and fire breath by 7. It can be equipped by the Hero, his Son, Slime, Healslime, Metal slime, Liquid metal slime, Cureslime, King slime, King cureslime, Man o' war, Slime knight, Restless armour, Blizzybody, Warhog, Moosifer, Pip fighter, Conkuistador, Samigina, Hawk man, Mandrake marshal, Hyperanemon, Killing machine, Barbatos, Dwight, and Starkers. It is part of the Son's initial equipment. The shield can be purchased for 3,400 gold from Lodestar Harbour, Zoomingale, Helmunaptra, and Battenburg and sold for 1,700 gold (2,550 gold in the Super Famicom version). A magic shield can be found on the Ventuno TNT board as well.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit | edit source]

The Magic shield has a Defence bonus of +20, a Style bonus of +21, and reduces damage taken from Frizz, Sizz, and Bang spells by 8. It can be equipped by the Hero, Carver, Ashlynn, Terry, Nevan, and Amos. The shield can be purchased for 5,000 gold and sold for 3,750 gold. It can be reworked at the Fashion Forge for 1,000 gold, boosting its Style bonus to +38. Once it has been reworked, it can be sold for 3,937 gold. It has a 1⁄128 chance of being dropped by Bad karmour.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit | edit source]

The Magic shield has a Defence bonus of +18, a Style bonus of +21, and reduces damage taken from Frizz, Sizz, and Bang spells by 10. It can be equipped by the Hero, Kiefer, Maribel, Sir Mervyn, and Aishe. The shield can be purchased for 5,000 gold from La Bravoure, the Temple Palace, El Ciclo, Spilton-on-Sea, Hubble, and Aeolus Vale, and sold for 2,500 gold. Magic shield can be won as a prize from the Lucky Panel at the Casino. One can be found at Hubble in the past in a treasure chest.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined[edit | edit source]

The Magic shield has a Defence bonus of +22, a Magical Might bonus of +12, a Magical Mending bonus of +11, and a Block Chance of 6%. It reduces damage taken from elemental attacks by 5%. When used as a tool in battle, it raises a character's spell resistance by one stage. The shield can be received as a reward for turning in 20 Mini medals. It cannot be purchased or sold anywhere.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit | edit source]

The Magic shield has a Defence bonus of +27 and reduces damage taken from Frizz, Sizz, and Bang spells by 15. It can be equipped by the Hero and Angelo, as well as Morrie in the Nintendo 3DS version. The shield can be purchased for 5,000 gold from Argonia once the bazaar starts or from Arcadia, and sold for 2,500 gold. Magic shield can be made in the Alchemy Pot and mixed to create other shields, as well.

The Magic shield has a Defence bonus of +3, a Style bonus of +6, a Block Chance of 3%, and a Weight bonus of +7. It reduces damage taken from attack spells by 3%. The shield has an equipment level of 35 and can be equipped by a Warrior, Priest, Mage, Thief, Minstrel, Paladin, Armamentalist, Ranger, Sage, Luminary, Item Master, Fortune Teller, Druid, Gadabout, Demon Swordsman, Pirate, Guardian, Dragomancer, or Hermit. It can be crafted by an armour blacksmith. Starting with Version 6.2, the amount of materials required to make one were reduced, making it easier to craft. Previously, it requires six lumps of Silver ore, three urns of Royal soil, and a Savvy sapphire.

Dragon Quest X Offline[edit | edit source]

The Magic shield has a Defence bonus of +3, a Charm bonus of +6, a Block Chance of 3%, and reduces damage taken from attack spells by 3%. It can be equipped by the Hero as a Warrior, Priest, Mage, Thief, Minstrel, Paladin, Armamentalist, Ranger, Sage, Luminary, or Sage, and Hussar, Fuura, Duston, Raguas, and Anlucia. The shield can be purchased for 5,300 gold or crafted with the Fun-Size Forge.
