Zapple is a lightning spell introduced in DQ3. It is a mid-tier of the Lightning spell family between Zap, Kazap, and Kazapple.

Localization history
Localization history
The Japanese spell Raidein was previously localized as Zap for the English adaptations of the series, until the localization of Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker in 2007, which featured a lightning spell weaker than Raidein. This spell, Dein, is akin to Sizz and Crack in terms of power and how early a character learns it in an adventure, bumping Raidein up to being a mid-tier spell. Because the English word Zap cannot be simplified as it's Eastern equivalent was, the localization department instead opted to have the word Zapple refer to Raidein in any game in which Dein is present.
This spell was originally named Zap. However, with the arrival of a lower-tier Dein spell, they moved the name Zap to that one, and renamed Raidein Zapple.

For older titles that were localized after the introduction of Dein, such as Dragon Quest VI,  Zap continues to be used for Raidein to adhere to the three-stage naming convention for spells seen in Square Enix's translation process as there is no intermediate spell to add the "-le" suffix to between Zap and Kazap. An exception is Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, where Raidein is translated as "Zapple" in the manga and its anime adaptation, but "Zap" in spinoff media (which extends to derived techniques like Raidein Strash).

Zap can be used by togres for 70~90 damage.
DQ5
Zap's range improves from this installment. Specifically, the spell conjures a small lightning storm that targets all enemies instead of a single bolt. The spell costs a mere 6 MP to cast, and deals between 70 and 90 damage.

Zap is learned when a character reaches rank 4 of the Hero V vocation, rank 8 of the Delusionist, and rank 5 of the Slaughtomaton MFamilies vocations. As expected, it behaves as it did two games ago.
