Divide is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series. The user creates multiple shadow clones of themselves that can either act independently on their own, distract opponents by preventing their main body from being attacked, or perform multiple attacks at the same time.

Appearances

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

During the Tournament of Endor, the Abominable Showman will create three doppelgängers of himself at the start of the match. The doppelgängers do not act on their own and only serve as a distraction, giving Alena a 1 in 4 chance of attacking his actual body. He will divide himself after he or one of his clones is attacked until he is defeated.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Dhoulmagus will divide himself into three doppelgängers at the beginning of the first battle against him. Each clone is able to attack independently, but has less HP than his main body. Dhoulmagus will only use the ability once, even if both of his clones have been defeated. It is also possible to defeat his main body first before his doppelgängers.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Erik can learn Divide through the Guile panel on his character builder for 14 skill points, requiring at least four of the surrounding panels to be unlocked first. It costs 6 MP to use and allows Erik to perform an attack or skill three times on his next turn. The effect can be countered by removing his ability to move the next turn (e.g. being stunned, put to sleep or paralysed) or by Disruptive Wave. When used in conjunction with attack skills such as Fatal Flash, Double Down, Persecutter, or Victimiser, Erik has the potential to deal the most damage in the game. Divide will also help in the use of Half-Inch, tripling its overall success rate.

On the enemy's side, the Abominable Showman is able to create three doppelgängers of himself during the Masked Martial Arts tournament at Octagonia. However, unlike the Abominable Showman from Dragon Quest IV, these clones are able to attack on their own. The Abominable Showman is only able to divide himself a total of three times due to his low MP pool. His doppelgängers will be defeated instantly if the Abominable Showman's main body is defeated.

Dragon Quest Tact

Dhoulmagus will learn the perk Clone with 10 awakening points. It will raise the evil jester's evasion rate by 100% for the first three turns of battle, preventing attacks and physical skills from affecting him. However, he will still be able to be damaged by breath attacks and spells.

Etymology

Divide is based on the supposed Daoist and fangshi technique of fēnshēn (分身, lit. "to divide the body"), which would transform or multiply one's body into two or more identical versions. It was also one of the legendary abilities said to be used by ninjas in order to confuse their enemies. Some have hypothesized that a coordinated team of ninjas dressed in identical clothing could give the perception of a single attacker being in multiple locations at once.
