Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation (Super Famicom version)
This vocation only appears in the SFC version of Dragon Quest VI. In the remakes, it's replaced by the Monster Master vocation and the recruitable slime buddies. Both appear similar, but they are slightly different: the wranglers can scout monsters while the masters cannot.
The Monster Wrangler vocation takes 164 battles to master, and reduces strength by 15%, max HP by 20% and max MP by 30%.
While its a net negative on the stats side, the bonus of using this vocation is being able to scout monsters:
| Rank | Battles Needed | Total Battles Needed | Skills learnt |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | - | - | - |
| 2 | 17 | 17 | Sweet Breath |
| 3 | 15 | 32 | Poison Breath |
| 4 | 25 | 57 | Tongue Bashing |
| 5 | 19 | 76 | Cool Breath |
| 6 | 16 | 92 | Flame Breath |
| 7 | 32 | 124 | Burning Breath |
| 8 | 40 | 164 | Puff! |
Monster scouting is randomly decided at the end of the battle. Ranking up the vocation allows the player to have access to a bigger variety of monsters:
| Rank | Monster | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Slime | 1/2 |
| Feralball | 1/8 | |
| Lips | 1/64 | |
| 2 | Mud mannequin | 1/64 |
| Walking corpse | 1/32 | |
| Healslime | 1/16 | |
| Slime knight | 1/4 | |
| 3 | Lesser demon | 1/4 |
| Sluggernaut | 1/4 | |
| Gustbluster | 1/64 | |
| 4 | Rockbomb | 1/32 |
| Dreamaera | 1/32 | |
| Damned ram | 1/16 | |
| King slime | 1/64 | |
| Liquid metal slime | 1/256 | |
| 5 | Boss troll | 1/16 |
| 6 | - | - |
| 7 | Overkilling machine | 1/64 |
| 8 | High djinks | 1/256 |
Dragon Quest X
The Monster Wrangler is much more physically robust profession, boasting the third highest Strength and fourth highest HP of all vocations. This is balanced by having poor Agility and max MP. It is one of the two vocations capable of scouting monsters as companions, along with the Item Master.
They can scout: Slime, Teeny Sanguini, Jailcat, Healslime, Slime Knight, Chimaera, Meowgician, Mandrake Major, Imp, Hacksaurus, Brownie, Small Fry, Dracky, Mischievous Mole, and Great Sabrecat.
The Monster Wrangler wields Axes, Claws, Whips, and Greatswords in battle, and possesses the exclusive skill tree of まものマスター. This skill set focuses on:

Dragon Quest Builders 2
While the vocation does not appear in this game, the "wrangler" terminlogy was first alluded to by the wrangler's ring item in Dragon Quest Builders 2 in 2019. Once the builder gets this ring, they can scout some friendly monsters.
Dragon Quest Monsters series
All characters who train monsters are referred to as Monster Wranglers. The "Monster Wrangler" designation officially replaced the older Monster Master starting in Dragon Quest Tact, and the term was given wider exposure to English-speaking fans through Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince in 2023, with the adolescent Psaro being forced to take up the vocation due to the curse placed upon him by his father Randolfo.
Dragon Quest Tact
The Hero of Dragon Quest V was given the title of "Legendary Monster Wrangler" for his appearance as a unit in Tact, marking the first appearance of the term in English media.
