Characteristics edit
The leather shield has gone through several designs throughout the series history, but has maintained its status as a light shield that provides a basic amount of protection early in the game.
- The original design from the Famicom version of Dragon Quest I featured a design of a fire-breathing dragon.
- The design from the Famicom version of Dragon Quest II has a design of a bird of prey spreading its wings.
- The leather shield from the Famicom version of Dragon Quest III features a stylised design of an ant with twelve legs. This design would be used until Dragon Quest VI and brought back for the HD-2D Remake games.
- The design introduced in Dragon Quest VII appears to have been patched together from various animal skins. It has been used in most modern games.
Due to its ease of use combined with its defensive value for its price, the leather shield is popular with novice adventurers. It was the weakest shield in the series in terms of defence, but starting with Dragon Quest V, this position was taken by the Pot lid.
