Cutting Edge is a skill in the series.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
This skill envelops the user's greatsword or other weapon with an aura of light and delivers a powerful, full-bodied slash. In some games, it can be performed with any weapon. Its name is a reference to the phrase "cutting edge", which means the forefront or position of greatest advancement in some field.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit | edit source]
Cutting Edge costs 20 MP to use and inflicts around 270% damage as a normal attack to a single enemy. It can be learned by the Prince of Midenhall at level 41.
- When his HP is below 50% or he is under the effects of Focus Pocus, the Souped-Up Skill Unbridled Blade becomes available to use by holding down a button, depending on which version of the game is being played. The player must have the Soul Sigil in their possession to use it.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit | edit source]
Cutting Edge can be learned by a Warrior starting at level 48 if their Wisdom exceeds 93. It costs 14 MP to use inflicts 220% Strike-element damage to a single enemy. The ability can be used with any weapon equipped.
- The May 23rd, 2025 update patch increased the amount of damage it deals to 350%.

Dragon Quest X [edit | edit source]
Cutting Edge costs 3 MP to use and inflicts between 250% to 300% damage to a single enemy. It can be learned by Warriors by investing 13 skill points into their Greatswords skill, while Gladiators, Demon Swordsmen, and Guardians by investing 100 skill points. Monster Wranglers originally learned the skill as well, but it was replaced with Super Cutting Edge starting with Version 6.5.
- In the Offline version of the game, Cutting Edge costs 4 MP to use and inflicts between 180% to 200% weapon damage to a single enemy. It can be learned by the Hero and Hussar through the Greatswords panel in their Character Builders for 9 skill points. It is a secret skill for the Hero, requiring at least four of the surrounding panels to be unlocked first. The damage can be increased further with skill-up panels.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit | edit source]
The Hero and Hendrik can learn Cutting Edge through the Greatswords panel in their Character Builders for 10 skill points, costing 8 MP to use. It inflicts between 175% to 225% damage to a single enemy, but is unable to land a critical hit.
Dragon Quest Heroes II[edit | edit source]
Cutting Edge can be learned by Terry once he has reached One-Handed Sword proficiency level 7, costing 11 MP to use. Terry charges his sword with energy and delivers a powerful overhead slash after leaping into the air, unleashing a shockwave that sends enemies flying.
- Cutting Edge can be upgraded further into Super Cutting Edge at proficiency level 8. It is performed by charging Cutting Edge for a short time and costs 15 MP to use. At proficiency level 13, it will upgrade even further into Über Cutting Edge, which costs 19 MP to use. Each upgrade increases the size of Terry's sword and both the damage and range of the attack.
Dragon Quest Tact[edit | edit source]
Known as Slashing Edge in this game, it is known naturally by Night clubber at level 1 and can be learned by Axesaurus, Robbin' 'oodlum, and Skeleton soldier at level 22, and Squidzilla at level 31. It costs 20 MP to use and inflicts 195% potency physical damage to a single enemy. Slashing Edge can also be taught to any non-Hero unit by using an ability scroll.
