Characteristics edit
The user emits a horrifying scream from their mouth, inflicting non-elemental damage to the entire party. The damage cannot be reduced by Defence or any resistances. In most games, it is an enemy-only ability.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation edit
Ferocious Roar is used by Mortamor in his third form and Nokturnus. When used it deals 120~150 damage, and the game states that "A blistering wave of energy shoots from his mouth!"
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past edit
Ferocious Roar is used by Orgodemir in his third form during the final battle and inflicts 120~150 damage. In the original Sony PlayStation version, the in-game text states that "Orgodemir made a terrifying cry!" when it is used.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King edit
Ferocious Roar is used by Emerald Dragon and deals 120~150 damage. Unlike other entries, the damage cannot be reduced even when defending.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies edit
Ferocious Roar is once again used by Mortamor when faced as a Legacy Boss. Its damage can reach around 350 when Mortamor reaches level 99 since it is designed to scale with his level.

Ferocious Roar can be used by various bosses, including Dhuran and Nokturnus.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age edit
Ferocious Roar can be used by various monsters and bosses, including Rantingen raven, Cheater cheetah, Mordegon in his second form, Chihuawyrm, Labradrake, Tatsunaga, and Red giant. Rantingen raven's version deals around 30 damage, cheater cheetah's version deals around 60 damage, and the version used by the others deals around 95 damage.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince edit
Known as Hellish Howl in this game, it costs 12 MP and deals a minimum of just ten damage to all enemies with a chance to stun for one turn. It will grow along with the user's Wisdom, reaching a cap of approximately 256 damage at 1,999 Wisdom. Hellish Howl is learned through the Barbarus, Devil's Advocate, Greygnarl, Mordegon, Lord of Shadows, Nokturnus, and Paragon talents.

Dragon Quest Tact edit
There are two variations of Hellish Howl in the game that are used by various bosses and other monsters in high-level stages. The first costs 112 MP to use, inflicts major martial damage to all units in a radius of 1 around the user, and has a chance to confuse them, as well.

The second variation is a skill used by both Demon King Orgodemir and Rhapthorne's True Form during their Mega Boss Battles. It inflicts major unreflectable martial damage to all enemies in the two first two rows in front of the stage, knocks them back three spaces, and has a chance to lower their DEF for three turns and confuse them.
