Big Banga (pronounced Big Banger) is a recurring ability in the franchise.

Its elemental nature varies between titles, but it is always a skill of prodigious strength when used.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit | edit source]

Big Banga is learned by Mercury at level 14. The only other way to obtain this skill is by mastering the Liquid metal slime vocation. It deals 300~400 Fire damage, and cremates all foes for 30 MP.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit | edit source]

In the original PSX version of VII only characters that master the Platinum King Jewel vocation will learn the skill. It has the same damage range, cost, and element as in VI. In the Nintendo 3DS remake, reaching rank 7 of the Druid and rank 6 of the Hero vocations will also unlock the skill. Darkonium slimes use it in this version.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit | edit source]

Yangus can use Big Banga as a scythe technique after allocating 100 skill points into the associated skill tree. It's strength is dependent on Yangus' level: prior to level 55, it will deal 175~225 Fire damage to all enemies. Once the brazen bandit surpasses the benchmark, the skill will deal 300~400 damage. Both parameter sets require 30 MP to be used, and are affected by Yangus' tension level.

Big Banga is also the deathmove of the monster team called The Legends, which consists of Hori, Nohi, Sugi, & Tori, and it can be used by Gracky, the giant Dracky born from the fusion of the three recruitable Drackies.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit | edit source]

Big Banga can be used by any character that has the Hardcore Hammering (quest #82) item in their inventory. The skill is of the Darkness element this time around, and will deal 240~360 fixed damage when used. It costs only 16 MP to use this time, and will affect all enemies.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit | edit source]

This skill can only be learned by the Luminary when his power awakens. It is locked behind a hidden panel in the Luminary skill set and costs 16 skill points to unlock. The skill will deal a maximum of 330 Fire-element damage on a group of enemies and costs 24 MP to use. The restless knight and king of metal king slimes will also use it against the Luminary.

Dragon Quest Monsters[edit | edit source]

Called BigBang in this Eidos localization, it requires the monster to reach level 36 with 196 HP, 196 MP and 208 Intelligence. It is naturally learned by DeathMore, DeathMore (Final form), Divinegon, GoldGolem, GoldSlime and Zoma. It can also be learned by monsters knowing Explodet, WhiteFire and WhiteAir.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2[edit | edit source]

BigBang now requires 612 Intelligence to learn. It is naturally learned by PsychoPiz.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit | edit source]

Big Banga uses the Darkness element, and will hit all enemies for 175~225 damage at the cost of 50 MP. It is learned for 100 points in any of the following:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit | edit source]

Big Banga costs 52 MP and deals (Level x 1.5) + 150 Explosion-element damage to all enemies. It is learned through the Airhead, Walking Disaster, Wrecker, and Zoma.

Dragon Quest Heroes & Dragon Quest Heroes II[edit | edit source]

"I told you to leave me alone!"

Big Banga is Nera Briscoletti's Coup de Grâce. She twirls her wand around in a circle, then sends out an explosion that devastates anything caught within the blast. The finisher works best when used in conjunction with the creature-corralling Maelstrom for tighter group efficiency.

Dragon Quest Treasures[edit | edit source]

Big banga deals Explosion-element damage on all enemies in the blast radius for 8 MP, and is learned by king slimes as well as the Magmantes.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit | edit source]

Big Banga appears once again as Nera's Coup de Grâce. It can be learned by her at level 80 and costs 137 MP to cast. It has a range of three squares away from her in any direction and inflicts major Bang-type spell damage to all enemies in a 3x3 square. Since it is a Coup de Grâce, it takes 4 turns to charge and can only be used once per battle. Upgrading the spell increases its damage and reduces the amount of MP it costs to cast.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

  • When Plus-Alpha localized VIII, the skill was given a curious vowel ending. This is reflective of the Cockney accent that Yangus speaks with in the western localization, and the association has stuck ever since.
