{{ | Barbatos is the name of a duke of hell described in ''[[Wikipedia:The Lesser Key of Solomon|The Lesser Key of Solomon]]'', being described as a humanoid who can speak with animals, conciliates rulers, and predict the future. The demon's name is derived from the Latin ''Barbatus'', meaning "Bearded". The localization team did their demonological homework, as this perfectly describes the {{MFamilies}}. | ||

Barbatos is a boss monster in Dragon Quest IV that has since become a regular enemy in the Dragon Quest series noteworthy for being a dangerous encounter in the late stage of a game.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Barbatos is one of Psaro the Manslayer's top generals and guards one of the four towers that maintain the barrier surrounding Castle Nadiria. He is a powerful spell caster, and with the exception of Aamon, possesses the most powerful magical capabilities of the four and often has an affinity for powerful explosive spells. His dialogue indicates that he is loyal to Psaro. Barbatos has the upper body of a solidly-built human man with a large pair of wings on his back, a huge pair of curved horns on his head, and pointed ears, while his lower body is that of a goat. His skin is light blue and his hair and the fur on his lower half is indigo or purple, depending on the game. He has a forked beard and the horns on his head are bronze-coloured. When Barbatos reappeared in VII, he had tan-coloured skin with brown fur on his lower half and grey hair and horns instead of the normal colouration.
Appearances[edit | edit source]
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit | edit source]
This grating goat is immune to Whack, Poof, Fuddle, Dazzle, Snooze, Drain Magic, and is highly resistant to all forms of attack magic except for Woosh and Zap spells. He casts Kaboom and breathes intense flames. He drops the Miracle sword when he dies.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit | edit source]
A pair of these fiends appear near the summit of Mt. Zugzwang. In the room right before the lair of Grandmaster Nimzo, a treasure chest containing the Orichalcum fangs can be found. When the Hero attempts to open the chest, the pair break down the door and engage the party in battle. They cannot be recruited in this battle due to the polluting evil of Mt. Zugzwang, but they can join the party when found again as a normal encounter in Estark's Labyrinth.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit | edit source]
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit | edit source]
Dragon Quest X [edit | edit source]
Appearing as a boss for the first time since IV, it has been strengthened considerably, using abilities and spells like Kaboomle, Scorch, and Eldritch Eclipse to decimate players.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit | edit source]
This monster does not have a vicious, nor a malicious variant.

Dragon Quest Walk[edit | edit source]
Barbatos appeared as a boss in Chapter 3 of the Dragon Quest IV event held in November 2019, later appearing as a powerful monster in various places. He has the ability to perform desperate attacks, cast Boom, and use War Cry, Flame Breath, and Chilly Breath. Barbatos can also be scouted as a monster companion, as well.
Dragon Quest Tact[edit | edit source]
Barbatos first appeared as a boss during the original Dragon Quest IV event, eventually appearing as a S-rank monster of the Demon family on his own banner alongside Shogum. He can be faced in the event story Chapter 4, Episode 2: The Second Barrier, as well as in the Den of Barbatos on the Road to Psaro's Peak. Barbatos is joined by a pair of Canniboxes and Drackymas when faced in his Den.

Etymology[edit | edit source]
Barbatos is the name of a duke of hell described in The Lesser Key of Solomon, being described as a humanoid who can speak with animals, conciliates rulers, and predict the future. The demon's name is derived from the Latin Barbatus, meaning "Bearded". The localization team did their demonological homework, as this perfectly describes the monster.
