The wayfarer's clothes consists of a sturdy, long blue sleeveless tunic made out of hemp, worn with a leather belt around the waist, and a blue cape. They can typically be purchased in the first town a player visits in a game. They offer low-level protection to novice adventurers, especially those who cannot wear heavier armour.

In ''Stars'', it is known as the traveller's attire and has a completely different design, consisting of a lime green tunic worn over a blue long-sleeved shirt, a leather belt around the waist with a small pouch in the front, and a pair of leather gloves. It also gained a counterpart for the legs slot, like many other pieces of equipment. This design is based on the archer's clothes from ''Dragon Quest X'' and also appears in ''A Hero's Bonds''.

    • Both the male and female Hero in Dragon Quest III wear them. Sometimes their capes are colored purple instead of blue.
    • Alena is garbed in a yellow version with a blue cape.
    • Both Parry and Madchen have a child-sized version; the former with a tattered blue outfit, the latter with a well-tended lilac outfit.
  • Wayfarer's clothes are one of the few items in the series whose price has stayed consistent in every game they have appeared.
